Well, considering the Coop posted about how “nature is healing” because they’re both #1 in the UK and Anne likewise sought out a post celebrating them both…. it’s all planned, of course.
When this stuff was happening under Sony the reasoning was that Louis “wanted to be eclipsed” and was happy to play supportive partner, and just signed a record deal cause it was the thing to do, and didn’t really care about music. The thing is, I see this type of theorizing all over the place for other RPF ships, too. Nothing new under the sun.
this is exactly the type of journalism i joined substack for. was never a huge 1D fan despite being in late elementary school and early middle school during their peak, however this was suchhh an interesting read!
Loved this. I published an essay on Harry that holds a similar sentiment, so I was looking for others that felt the same and came across yours. Exactly the validation I was looking for lol. Great read!!!
Thanks for the heads up, I just read through it and you might enjoy my most recent piece on Harry as well that tracks the behind the scenes movements to what you noticed in your piece as an audience member. I fell off the harrie wagon in 2017 and started paying absurdly close attention to the mechanism behind his career.
Looooved this analysis and bookmarking all your One Direction content for future reading. I’m a newer fan (post-Liam’s death) and really believed that first year that the insane fandom drama I’d heard tales of would surely be over now that everyone was older and wiser. I was so very wrong! Looking forward to reading more.
Thank you so much! I’m still working on my deep dive series, so there’s a lot more to come. I’m not sure if things are better or worse now, but what has really imacted the drama is the way the past has been rewritten in many corners. It’s not always malicious, it’s a side effect of turnover among audiences, and there’s little interest in digging through what actually happened when people loudly state things as fact. Doing my best to untangle all that for observers with my years in the trenches AND digging!
this was such an interesting read!! very excited for the Louis deep dive! the roll out of the last two Harry albums have really stirred dislike within me and i’m glad others have been noticing it too!! To me, it comes down to whether what I’m consuming feels authentic and genuine, it’s what I believe music should be, and Harry really just does consistently feel like a marketing ploy rather than someone who is truly passionate about the art they make.
Yep. Was a hard-core fan since 2012 and was part of the fandom defending Harry's every move once they broke up. Around the time of the Olivia Wilde debacle, my view of Harry started to sour and now I know very, very little about what's been going on with him. I was very turned off with how he presented himself during covid and nothing I've heard since has convinced me in the slightest to return to such a toxic and nasty fandom.
Great post. I've always thought that Harry had a bit of a mean streak in him ever since I found out he was friends with James Corden, a notoriously jealous and rude celebrity. While his former bandmates' careers might be smaller, and their music on average less good, I think I respect them more for following their own paths without playing these games.
I’ll be going into way more detail on the structural scaffolding in my deep dive in his career. PR narratives obscure a lot of what goes on, so easily.
i wonder what the hardcore Larries are making of this right now

naturally, they need to create a fabricated feud to hide their decades-long romantic relationship. or something like that

Thank you so much! There is more where that came from.
